How to Perfectly Curl Your Hair With a Flat Iron

It seems counterintuitive, but it works so well.

The quest for perfectly flowing curls is one that perplexes many a woman, but here’s a tip you might not have thought of: Instead of trying to achieve the results you seek with a curling iron, try using a flat iron instead.

Seem strange? We thought so too, until we saw this tutorial from Harper’s BAZAAR. Stylist Matt Fugate makes this unusual concept seem super-simple.

Step 1: Prep hair with a thermal protectant.

This is a good idea before using any heat-styling tool on your hair. One to try: L’anza Healing Style Thermal Defense Spray ($23,

Step 2: Create tension with the flat iron, twist and pull.

Think of your hair as a ribbon and the flat iron as scissors — same concept! What’s great about this technique is that you can be selective about where the curl forms.

Step 3: For hair closer to the crown, twist away from your face.

The results are more flattering and modern, especially if you leave the ends a little straight.

Step 4: Repeat the twist-and-pull process with random strands.

Gently pull the flat iron down through your hair on most — but not all — pieces of your hair. The randomness gives it a more natural look.

Step 5: Brush out your hair.

By brushing your hair, you’ll mask any imprints that may have been left by the flat iron. Try a shine-enhancing paddle brush like the Sephora Collection Nylon Paddle Hair Brush ($18,

Now your look is complete!
